ANALYTICAL TRAINING:

INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS PRACTICE

BACKGROUND

The Intelligence Analysis Practice program is ISC's entry-level course into intelligence. It provides basic understanding of the role of intelligence and the processes involved. The program focuses on fundamental issues about intelligence usage and the techniques involved.

As in all ISC programs, participants graduate with knowledge of the skills and techniques necessary to carry out their roles, having gained experience in applying these within realistic exercise settings.

STANDARDS CERTIFICATION

The ISC Intelligence Analysis Practice (IAP) program meets and exceeds the published benchmark standards issued by UK/NCIS in 2000 for UK enforcement training applicable at this basic level.

CONTENT -  FULL IAP COURSE

The IAP Program is a full time, intensive residential course conducted over a 10-day period. The course includes the following topics, leading to the award of Certificate in Intelligence Analysis Practice:

  • intelligence doctrine, definitions, background, applications and products
  • the intelligence process, its discipline and flexibility
  • the pivotal role, functions and responsibilities of the analyst
  • setting up analytical case-work  - planning the task, resources and timing
  • development of appropriate data collection plans (including OSI)
  • network analysis  -  objectives, associating entities, link charting techniques
  • familiarisation with computerised charting and visualisation tools, techniques and outcomes
  • introduction to crime pattern analysis, geographic profiling and criminal profiling
  • integrating data, analysing it and developing hypotheses and findings
  • active thinking concepts and their links to analysis and hypotheses
  • preparing verbal briefings and written reports

FUNDAMENTALS 5-DAY IAP COURSE

A shorter version of the IAP course is available, leading to award of a Fundamentals of Intelligence Analysis Practice certificate.

Though shorter in duration, we cover all the main teaching points related to skills and techniques of analysis. However, because of the shorter length of time available, only limited practising of these skills is possible and students graduate with a basic knowledge of the skills and techniques.

DISTANCE-BASED VERSION

This course is also available in distance-based format from ISC.
